Description

Vietnam went through prolonged colonial rule & warfare in the 20th Century, despite atrocities, the resilient Vietnamese people embraced the culture of its oppressors. This has been beautifully expressed in their cuisines. For example French accent is inseparable from South Vietnamese culinary. Dalat, a town in the Vietnam’s Central Highlands narrates a story of cross pollination with the French. The hint of star anise (oriental spice) in French Mulled wine & French breads with Vietnamese Pho. In another instance, Coffee first landed in Vietnam from France, and today Vietnam is the World’s second largest producer of coffee. The exchange of Art and Culture is beyond Political & Geographical barriers.

Plot

1.Location Still life is at the backdrop of a restaurant in Dalat, Central Highlands of Vietnam (Biang Dalat Garden Bistro, Jan 2020). Erstwhile French town.

2.Décor Rustic aesthetics, cracks in the table & wall suggest humble means of Vietnamese.

3.Star Anise on the spice platter highlight cross pollination with French.

4.Salt & Pepper symbolise Taste.

5.Flowers Alstroemeria Villamassa commonly known as Peruvian Lilly suggests cross pollination of cultures

6.Light Source the light piercing through the cracks, is a symbol of resilience.
